Grease, Fats & Oils

Grease sticks to the inside of your pipes, together with fats and oils form a gluey roadblock onto which all sort of things stick forming larger pieces that end up blocking your drains. The best way to avoid a blocked drain is to let the fats cool down, then throw them out with the trash.

Egg Shells

An eggshell, even crushed, if it sticks to anything in your drain, acts as a barrier to anything coming down the drain, collecting small pieces that accumulate and cause a clog. The is made worse by the eggshells’ membrane also acting as an adhesive.

Flour

Flour when mixed with water, creates a sticky, thick substance that you don’t want to be lurking in your kitchen plumbing. Avoid throwing even small amounts of flour down the sink.

Fruit stickers

Make it a habit to take off the stickers of fruits before you wash them. These tiny stickers do not dissolve in water, and will eventually block your drains

Coffee grounds

It tangles around things, tying them nicely to block your bathroom sinks. One small hair today, another small one tomorrow. It also adds up, avoid flushing hair down the sink to avoid blocking your bathroom sink.

Bath Salts

When using bath salts, not all of them dissolve in water.  You might even notice a number of lumps at the bottom of the tub.  Be wary of the innocent-looking bath salts, they might end up blocking your bathroom drains.

Cotton Buds

Cotton is an extremely absorbent material that expands when it absorbs water. You definitely do not want it in your drains.

Baby wipes

Worth a mention are nappies and baby wipes. You should never flush these down the toilet. When immersed in water, they absorb the moisture and enlarge to block your drains.

Never flush anything you shouldn’t down the drain. Avoid adding more chemicals into the mix by using chemical cleaners.
